Madhurai meenakshi 360° view
Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple Meenakshi Sundareshwarar Temple or Meenakshi Amman Temple in Tamil: Meenakshi Amman Temple is a historic Hindu temple in the holy city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva (in the form of Sundareswarar or the Beautiful God) and his consort Parvati (in the form of Meenakshi).
According to Hindu mythology, Shiva descended to earth in the form of Sundareshwarar to marry Meenakshi, an avatar of Parvati. Parvati had earlier descended to earth in the form of a small child in return for the intercession of Malayadwaja Pandya, the ruler of Madurai. After she grew up, she started to rule the city. Lord Shiva came down to earth and proposed to her. All over the world gathered in Madurai for that wedding, making it the biggest event on earth. Meenakshi's brother Vishnu was on his way from Vaikuntha, his holy abode, to officiate the marriage. On the way, God's majesty was cheated by Indra in the game and delayed. Meanwhile the marriage was performed by the local god Tirupparankundram (Pavalakanivai Perumal). It is celebrated annually in Madurai as 'Chithirai Thiruvila'. During Nayaka's reign in Madurai, the later ruler Tirumalai Nayakar made a connection between 'Ajakar Thiruvila' and 'Meenakshi marriage'. Hence 'Ajaghar Thiruvila' or 'Chithirai Thiruvila' was born.
This temple is the geographical and religious center of the ancient city of Madurai. The walls surrounding the temple, the roads and finally the city walls (ancient) were built around a concentric fort framework. Ancient Tamil classics indicate that the temple is the center of the city, and the roads spread out like a lotus and its petals. It is one of the few temples in Tamil Nadu with four entrances in four directions.
